Green Class

As Miss Storey has now started her maternity leave, Mr Nisbett will be teaching in Green Class until she returns. Mr Nisbett teaches regularly at Bedwas and has spent a considerable amount of time with Miss Storey in recent weeks which has ensured a smooth transition for the children.

‘Be Bright Be Seen’ Day – Friday 23rd November

We are continuing with our Active Journeys again this year and so we will be holding another ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ day on Friday 23rd November where all pupils are encouraged to wear their brightest/most reflective clothing to promote safety when walking/cycling to and from school. During our ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ day the children will also receive a PSE lesson linked to the topic.

Welcome Back

We hope you all had an enjoyable half-term. Yet again, we have been impressed with how quickly the children have settled back into the school routine and are clearly ready for the busy term ahead!

Please see the diary dates below for important events over the coming weeks. We will update you with exact details and times of concerts and special events as soon as possible. The Christmas Carol Services will be held in the school hall at the start of the school day or at the end of the day in order to try and make them more convenient for parents and carers. There will be two services for each for both lower and upper school with the choice of a morning or afternoon session. We hope that this will help.

School Improvement

During the first half-term, staff from both schools joined together to receive a range of in-service training and development.

INSET Day 1 was spent reviewing and evaluating school policies and procedures and collaboratively writing our joint School Development Plan.

INSET Day 2 was focused on receiving updates regarding the new ALN (Additional Learning Needs) reforms in Wales and developing strategies within school to ensure we consistently meet the needs of all of our pupils. Staff also received training on Precision Teaching from the Caerphilly Educational Psychology Service and teachers discussed the new professional standards and undertook a self-evaluation of their current practice.

If you would like further information regarding our school development plan, please do not hesitate to contact the school for information on our five priorities this academic year.

Yellow Class

We have had to temporarily move Yellow Class out of their room because of an issue with the floor. We are waiting for Building Consultancy to attend the school to work on a plan to rectify the problem. After 133 years the floor is in need of some repairs!

PE Kits

A reminder that all pupils require a full PE kit which should be kept in school for the half term. The PE kit is a white t-shirt, dark shorts (jogging bottoms may be worn for outdoor PE) and a pair of daps or trainers.

Harvest

Pupils at both schools joined together for a lovely Harvest celebration this week. Thank you for all your generous food donations which have now been distributed to the local food bank.

Half-Term

We would like to thank all parents and carers for their continued support this term. A reminder that Friday 26th October is an INSET day for staff only and school is closed to children. Pupils return to school on Monday 5th November. We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable half-term break.

Federation – Meeting 15th November 2018

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you already know, we have been working closely with Rhydri Primary School for several years.

The staff and governing bodies of both schools are keen to formalise this arrangement as a federation.  This will mean that the two schools continue to work in partnership to ensure an excellent learning experience for our children.

For both schools, Mr Cook will remain the Headteacher and Mrs Richards the Deputy Head (whilst Miss Bodenham is on maternity leave).

In fact, the only changes will be that the school leadership can spend more time on further improving provision and outcomes at school; the other change is that instead of two separate governing bodies, there will be will be one governing body. This will mean less repetition.

Next week, your child will bring home the formal consultation document about the federation.  This will provide lots of technical details and give you a chance to feedback.

On 15th November at 2.30pm there will be an opportunity to ask any questions you have of representatives from the governing body and the Local Authority at Bedwas Junior School. If you are unable to attend this meeting, you can attend Rhydri Primary School on the same date at 3.45pm.

So, what do you need to do?

  1. Know that the federation formalises the existing successful arrangements
  2. Read the consultation document
  3. Put your response in the box in school
  4. Attend the meeting on 15th Novemberif you have any questions
  5. Keep calm and carry on!

Kind regards,

Ms S Graf – Chair of Governors

School Start Times

A few parents have asked about procedures at the start of the school day, and in particular about where pupils should go when it is raining. To clarify, these are the school session times:

  • Breakfast Club – Pupils are admitted to Breakfast Club between 8:00am and 8:30am. Breakfast Club staff will then supervise the children until 8:40am.
  • School starts at 8:40am. Pupils are able to enter the playground or classrooms (wet mornings) from 8:20am when staff will be present to supervise them.
  • Please note that pupils should not enter the playground or the school building before 8:20am unless they are attending Breakfast Club.

Harvest Celebrations

Pupils will be celebrating Harvest on Tuesday 23rd October with a service at Rudry Parish Hall. This is a joint celebration with Rhydri Primary School and is for pupils only.

This year we will continuing our support of the “Bridging the Gap” foodbank which is based in Caerphilly. We would be grateful if pupils could bring a small food donation for the foodbank on this day.

Health and Safety

For safety reasons, please ensure that children (including younger siblings) do not climb on any equipment in the school grounds at the start and end of the school day. We politely request that children and parents leave the premises as soon as children have been collected. Thank you for your cooperation.
